RULES OF THE UNDERWATER PHOTO COMPETITION MIMA 2011

 

1. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
The aim of holding this competition in the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Nature Park is to make use of photography to show the biodiversity of the area's seabed, making all visitors and divers in general aware of the reserve, of the need for respect towards the environment and for protecting the seabed zones most exposed to people's presence.
The OPEN will be held according to the general rules set out below and special-schedule rules drawn up specifically for each edition.
A competition committee (as described in the special rules) will be appointed to ensure compliance with these rules, to investigate any incidents and to impose penalties where applicable and offer any technical advice required by participants.


2. JURY
2.1. The jury will be made up of three or five members of repute in the world of underwater photography, a secretary without voting rights and a marine biologist for providing advice.
2.2. The jury will have the task of awarding points for the pictures presented by participants in accordance with the rules laid down for the purpose and of signing the records of the events.
2.3. The secretary of the jury will be in charge of identifying participants, gathering in and marking the pictures, passing them on to the jury and drawing up the official records.
2.4. The jury will award a mark on a scale of 0 to 10 for the slides. Any photographs that the jury considers have been manipulated with risk to the environment or for living beings will be disqualified; the jury's verdict will be expressly noted in the records by the letter "D".
2.5. The jury will assess the photographs according to the technical criteria of execution and art; the jury will take into account the visibility conditions, pollution, light. during competition.
2.6. In the event of a draw, the chairman of the jury shall have the task of casting a tie-breaker vote.


3. ENROLMENT

3.1. Underwater photographers and assistants enrolling to take part in the OPEN must hold a qualification to prove their mastery of diving, as well as a current federation licence for the year or personal diving insurance.
A photocopy of the qualification and licence or diving insurance must be enclosed with the enrolment form, and the originals will have to be presented when making the final enrolment.
The limit data for enrolment will be the 15th May. Enrolment costs (participant + assistant):
- 90 &euro per team (if the team dives with air)
- 115 &euro per team (if the team dives with Nitrox)
On the pre-enrolment, the team must detail if dive with air or with Nitrox and the capacity bottles (12 or 15 litres). Nitrox will not be given if not requested, or if is not paid during the enrolment, or if the participants don't have the Nitrox tittle.

3.2. Each participant shall have an assistant, who must also comply with all the requirements set out under point 3.1.

4. DIVES

4.1. The organisers will make vessels available from which to take the competition dives. A draw will be held to allocate each participant the zone order and vessels for the competition.
4.2. The bottles an weights for the divers will be provided by the organisers, although participants may provide their own equipment if they notify the organisers in advance.
4.3. During the reconnaissance and competition dives all participants will have to abide by the activities their qualifications entitle them to engage in. Participants are forbidden from undertaking solo dives.
4.4. The competition will consist of four dives, each of which will be notified by the organisers to the particular rules for each edition.
4.5. Dives during the competition will be supervised by a commissioner for boat and diving area. The commissioners will assess the conditions of the marine environment and will ensure the appropriate development of the competition under the protection of underwater flora and fauna.
4.6. Any behaviour or action by participants that might be harmful to the sea or land in the area in which the competition is being held or to the living beings that live in/on them will be penalised.

5. STAGING OF THE COMPETITION

5.1. The competition will be held over the course of two days; the competition timetable will be set by the organisers and published in the special rules.
5.2. All participants are responsible for their own dives and, in the knowledge of their skills and limitations, will have to adjust their time to the timetables set by the organisers. Any negligence in complying with this rule, and in general any behaviour considered to endanger the safety of the competition or of any of the participants, may be penalised or the perpetrator thereof disqualified from the competition, at the discretion of the Committee.
5.3. Participants wishing to lodge any technical/sporting complaints will have to do so within a half-hour of the end of the dive then under way, and the Competition Committee will have to decide the issue.
5.4. No mechanical, underwater or surface traction equipment may be used. The use of dyes and colorants is strictly forbidden.
5.5. Any behaviour or action by participants that might be harmful to the sea or land in the area in which the competition is being held or to the living beings that live in/on them will be penalised by disqualification.
5.6. Participants must use one memory card for diving and one photographic equipment.
It is advisable to have four cards, one for diving. 5.7. Each day some control photographs will be taken about a theme designated by the organisers. Participants may not take more than 50 photographs per dive, including the control photographs. The format must be in JPG and in a minimum resolution of 2000 pixels in the longest side. Participants can shoot in RAW + JPG format, but will only be valid photos in JPG.
5.8. Once the control photograph has been taken and before handing in the card at the end of the competition day, participants may not make any further use of/adjustments to their equipment out of the water. Should they need to do so for any reason, however, such use/adjustment must be made in the presence of a commissioner.
5.9. At the end of each day, participants should hand in the memory cards of their equipment to the organisers so that they can make the pertinent control copies. The delivery will be a maximum of 15 minutes from the arrival of the vessel in port. The cards will be returned two hours after the collection of the last card.
5.10. Participants must choose six of the 200 photographs that will make during the days of competition.
5.11. The collections presented must include the following categories:
- Fauna
- Macro
-Environment
-Environment with model
-Open topic: the impact, the spectacularity or the originality of the photo will be assess Topic environment: the one that best represents the background of Medes islands
5.12. Participants must indicate on a sheet of paper (provided by the organisers) the codes of the six photographs chosen and their projection order once the jury has qualified them.
5.13 The author's copyrights of the presented photographs will continue belong to the photographer. MIMA only will be able to use them for the promotion of the contest in activities that do not have commercial purpose (edition of promotional leaflets of the contest and exhibitions)

6. CLASSIFICATIONS AND PRIZES

6.1. The final classification will be by collections and the participating photographer and his/her assistant will be awarded the prize jointly.
6.2 The prizes will be as follows:
            1st prize:          1.500 euros
            2nd prize:         1.100 euros
            3rd prize:          700 euros
The collaborators and sponsors may award special prizes for any photographs they consider particularly suited to the themes they are sponsoring. The collaborator/sponsor themes and prizes will be described in the special rules that will be circulated during the competition week.
6.3. The jury's decision is final. 6.4. The monetary prizes will be subject to current tax regulations for this type of remuneration.
